Reading Material (Pt II) - James Beard Foundation 2010 Journalism Award Finalists

In my last post, I listed the books that have been selected as finalists for the 2010 James Beard Foundation awards, with links to them on Amazon. Here I've listed the finalists for the journalism awards. I find these lists make for some great reading material, and there's certainly no reason to limit your review to only those that are ultimately selected for the award. I'm not sure why it's so hard to find a convenient source with links to all the nominated articles, so I've given all the links I've been able to find:

  1. Thanks for collecting these all in one place. There's an education right here in this collection. I love Jonathan Gold, Grub Sreet, and Saveur! Some new ones for me on the list too...

  2. What struck me as somewhat odd is how many people make multiple appearances on the list - Alan Richman like 3 times, but also J. Gold twice (for a cocktail article!) and Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl of the Minnesota Monthly (?!) twice too. I seem to recall last year's list being a bit more diverse.

  3. I agree last year was more diverse, but other years have been much like this one. There is a strong New York bias in the nominees, partly because so many publications are based there and partly because the New York food gang makes a concerted effort every year to enter material. It's a little publicized element of the Journalism Awards that the three nominees are actually finalists who had to submit their articles themselves, or had them submitted by their publisher, to the judging panel. Newer writers and shall we say less "urban" writers may not know the system as well and that is why we see a lot of the same names popping up every year. I think Alan Richman has (seriously) about 20 Beard Awards; he's good, yes, but he also has multiple entries every year the awards have been offered. If more writers submitted, there would be more diversity in the nominees, er, finalists. Maybe.
