Reading Material - Part I

In my last post I mentioned the local chefs still in contention for one of the James Beard awards. In addition to the chef and restaurant awards, there's a whole panoply of various media and journalism award nominations. I started rooting around to see how many of the nominated pieces are available online and thought I'd share the links for this extended reading list. I doubt I'll ever plow through all of them, but some that I'd already come across - like the piece on Schwa chef Michael Carlson - are excellent.

Some I can not turn up at all, some may be limited access, and I'll be doing this in at least two installments. Again, the whole list of nominees is here.

  1. Very much appreciate your posting links to the Beard-nominated projects. It's amazing that the Beard Foundation does not do so on their site.

  2. I read a bunch of these articles. I enjoyed reading about the pope of pork and his dedication to the pig. Reading a few of these articles has really made me more conscious of manner in which my meat is raised.

The article about Carlson was a real peculiar story... I had just read (and heard about him for the first time) an article about the same dinner in GQ i think. What a stressful meal...

I tried reading the Sound Check article, but my concentration was broken by the dull roar of P112 still ringing in my ears since January.

I want to eat at that grilling genius's resto real bad right now also.

  3. We were just in Basque Country and missed the opportunity to go to Etxebarri. Only so many meals can fit into 3 days. Next time.
